Shavettes, injectors and other blade formats
A shavette has an open, replaceable blade. An injector is a safety razor with a specific blade-loading system. Both avoid sharpening a fixed straight-razor blade, but their handling and blades differ.
Which blade fits?
| Format | Typical use | Important distinction |
|---|---|---|
| Full DE blade (double edge) | Traditional DE safety razors | Two cutting edges; use only in a head designed for it |
| Half DE blade | Many shavettes and some SE razors | Use only in a compatible holder; pre-cut blades simplify loading |
| Artist Club blade | Compatible replaceable-blade straight razors and SE razors | A separate format; not interchangeable with half DE or injector blades |
| Injector blade | Compatible injector razors | Use the correct magazine and follow the loading instructions |
| GEM blade with a reinforced spine | Compatible GEM SE razors | Not an injector format; use shaving blades, never scraper blades |
SE (single edge) describes one cutting edge, not a universal blade format. Some shavettes use other proprietary holders or blades. Check the instructions for your specific model before buying or replacing a blade. It must sit securely; never force an incompatible blade to fit.
Shaving with an open blade
- Learn the tool and grip with no blade installed first. A shavette is not automatically safer or easier than a straight razor.
- Install the blade according to the manufacturer’s instructions and handle only its designated safe surfaces.
- Work with a steady hand, good lighting, hydrated lather and little pressure. Angle and grip depend on the tool.
- Use short, controlled strokes in the shaving direction. Do not make circular movements or slide the cutting edge sideways along the skin.
- Start with the grain. If uncertain, use a safety razor or get practical instruction.
- Keep the edge safely away from fingers and your body during cleaning or blade changes. Collect used blades in a protected container.
Maintenance
A shavette does not need a strop or honing stone for its disposable blade. Its holder and hinge still need cleaning and care according to their instructions. A traditional straight razor has a fixed blade and requires separate stropping and honing skills.
