Straight Razors & Shavettes: Technique in Detail

Shaving with an open blade is considered the "supreme discipline". It requires a steady hand and precise tool preparation.

The Straight Razor: Preparation and Handling

  • Stropping: Use a suitable strop according to the razor and strop instructions. This aligns the fine edge of the blade. The blade is led flat with the spine leading.
  • The Grip: The razor is usually held in the "three-finger grip". Thumb on the underside of the tang, index and middle finger on the top. The ring finger rests on the tail (the curved end).
  • Skin Stretching: Avoid shaving across skin folds. A smooth surface may help control, but cannot guarantee protection from cuts. If you get ingrown hairs, avoid tight skin stretching and very close shaving.
  • Angle: Hold the razor at an angle of approx. 20° to 30°. An angle that is too steep leads to cuts, one that is too shallow only scrapes off the lather.

The Shavette: Special Features

In contrast to the straight razor, the blade of a shavette is extremely thin and rigid. It forgives less pressure than a traditional razor.

It is ideal for precise contouring, as no wide blade spine blocks the view.
