Shaving Techniques: Direction Matters
Before you begin, you should analyze your beard growth with your hand or a mirror ("Face Mapping") to know the actual growth direction in each area of your face.
The beard growth map explains how to check cheeks, chin and neck separately and record your observations.
- With the Grain (WTG): A sensible first pass following actual hair growth; helps reduce irritation and ingrown hairs.
- Across the Grain (XTG): Runs sideways to the growth direction. Noticeably increases closeness.
- Against the Grain (ATG): May shave closer, but can also promote irritation and ingrown hairs. Skip it if your skin reacts.
