Aftercare following a shave
A simple routine removes residue and supports skin comfort. It does not require several products or fixed waiting periods.
Three steps
- Rinse: Remove shaving products with clean, comfortably temperate water. Cool water may feel pleasant; it does not open or close pores like doors.
- Pat dry: Use a clean soft cloth rather than rubbing.
- Moisturize: Apply a small amount of an already tolerated moisturizer to intact skin. Fragrance-free is a useful starting point for sensitive skin.
Separate skin care from fragrance
| Product | Purpose | Limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Balm or moisturizer | Support moisture and comfort | Check ingredients; these products can also irritate |
| Splash or tonic | Liquid aftercare, often with fragrance or alcohol | Not automatically antiseptic, alcohol-free or gentle |
| Cologne / eau de toilette / eau de parfum | Fragrance | Not wound care; keep away from irritated or injured shaved areas |
The fragrance concentration of a perfume is not its alcohol content. Generic alcohol percentages for these product names are therefore misleading.
If a product burns
Rinse off the suspected product and stop using it. Rest irritated skin, avoid layering more active ingredients and wait until it settles before shaving again. Aloe, witch hazel and alum can also irritate.
Treat cuts separately with pressure, cleaning and a suitable covering. Cosmetic aftershave does not replace this. Seek professional advice for persistent, recurring or worsening symptoms.
