Head Shaving with a Safety Razor
Hair growth, curves and limited visibility deserve particular attention when shaving your head. Results, effort and cost depend on the tool and your routine.
Suitable Razors
Choose a tool you can control well. The following models are examples, not a guarantee of a gentle shave:
- Henson AL13 (Mild): DE razor with a fixed head; a small blade gap alone cannot guarantee skin tolerance
- Merkur 34C: Classic choice, short handle works well in tight spots, medium aggression
- Leaf Razor: Pivoting head makes navigating curves significantly easier
- Supply SE: Injector razor with a fixed head; requires compatible injector blades
Preparation
- Shower first: Comfortably warm water helps soften hair. Ensure a stable position and good visibility when shaving
- Lather: Apply generously and evenly; the head has a large surface area
- Hand mirror: A small hand mirror combined with a wall mirror gives you visibility on the back of the head
Shaving Technique
- Start with WTG (with the grain) across the entire head
- Grain direction on the scalp is complex – work slowly and feel with your hand
- At the back of the head, hair often grows in multiple directions; avoid ATG (against the grain) there at first
- Set the tool according to its instructions, use short controlled strokes and avoid forcing a generic handle position
Avoiding Ingrown Hairs
- Never use too much pressure
- WTG alone is often sufficient for a smooth scalp shave
- XTG (across the grain) for extra smoothness once you have practice
Scalp Aftercare
The scalp can also feel irritated or dry after shaving. Choose aftercare according to your actual reaction:
- Use aftershave balm rather than splash
- A light moisturizing serum or dedicated scalp care product is recommended
- When exposed to the sun: protect the scalp with a suitable hat and tolerated broad-spectrum sunscreen (UVA/UVB, SPF 30 or higher), following its instructions. Sun protection is not only a summer concern.
Learning Curve
Take your time and stop for burning or cuts. No fixed learning period or superiority over cartridges can be promised. For recurring bumps or irritation, seek professional advice.
