Water hardness and shaving lather

Calcium and magnesium ions determine water hardness. They can react with soap to form poorly soluble residue. The effect on shaving lather also depends on the soap formula, amount of soap and water added.

Hardness categories used in Germany

CategoryCalcium carbonate in mmol/lApproximate value in °dH
SoftBelow 1.5Below 8.4
Medium1.5 to 2.58.4 to 14
HardAbove 2.5Above 14

Countries may use different categories. Different supply zones within one city can have different values. Check your water supplier’s current figure for your address rather than classifying an entire city.

Check the lather systematically first

  1. Load enough soap and add water gradually.
  2. With the same soap and brush, compare against low-mineral water intended for drinking. Check its mineral content on the label.
  3. Record the soap amount, water additions and result. Hard water is not the cause of every poor lather.

Do not use battery water, technical-grade water or household softening products for shaving. Citric acid is not a routine addition to shaving water: it changes the pH, can irritate skin and may damage materials.

Cleaning is a separate task

Rinse and allow brushes and razors to dry after use. Descaling is separate from lather preparation. Use a descaler only when the manufacturer approves it for the specific material and product; follow its concentration and contact-time instructions. Brush glue, coatings and natural hair can be sensitive.

Boiling can reduce some temporary hardness but does not remove all dissolved minerals. It is not a guaranteed solution for shaving lather.
