Fragrance Profiles & Scent Notes Explained

Shaving soaps and aftershaves follow a scientific fragrance structure. Understanding how scents work helps you find your favorites.

The Three Layers of Fragrance

Professional fragrances are built in three layers, each perceptible at different times:

Top Notes (Head Notes)

  • Duration: 5-15 minutes
  • Character: Fresh, light, striking
  • Examples: Citrus (bergamot, lemon), mint, grapefruit
  • Effect: First impression, instant freshness

Recognition: The scent you smell immediately after application.

Heart Notes (Middle Notes)

  • Duration: 30 minutes to several hours
  • Character: Floral, spicy, complex
  • Examples: Rose, lavender, clove, cinnamon
  • Effect: The soul of the fragrance

Recognition: The scent after 15-20 minutes when top notes fade.

Base Notes

  • Duration: 4+ hours
  • Character: Warm, woody, sweet
  • Examples: Sandalwood, vetiver, musk, tonka
  • Effect: Longevity and depth

Recognition: The scent that remains at the end.
