Ingredients in shaving products and skin care
Ingredient lists help compare products. A single ingredient cannot guarantee glide or skin tolerance; concentration and the complete formulation also matter.
Soaps and creams
- Glycerin: binds water and is used as a humectant.
- Stearic acid: its soaps contribute to lather structure.
- Tallow and plant fats: possible raw materials for a soap base. Either can be part of a suitable or unsuitable formulation.
- Potassium hydroxide and sodium hydroxide: used in saponification. Their presence in a list alone does not establish how mild the finished product is.
Aftershaves and moisturizers
- Ethanol / Alcohol Denat.: can feel refreshing but may aggravate dry or irritated skin. Cosmetic aftershave is not a wound disinfectant.
- Witch hazel: used for astringent properties; extracts and alcohol content vary. Not automatically gentle.
- Panthenol and allantoin: common skin-care ingredients. They do not replace treatment of an inflamed area or open wound.
- Alum: an astringent ingredient in some styptic products. Use according to the instructions; it may irritate and does not sterilize skin.
- Fragrance and essential oils: add scent but may cause irritation or allergy. “Natural” does not mean allergen-free.
For a known contact allergy, compare the current ingredient list with the triggers identified by your clinician. Record a reaction and stop using the suspected product.
