Comparing blades meaningfully

Forums often describe sharpness, comfort and longevity as fixed brand properties. Without a shared measurement method and under different conditions, rankings do not transfer reliably. Razor, hair, technique and personal tolerance all affect the result.

A simple comparison

  1. Check which blade format your razor accepts.
  2. Buy small sample quantities rather than bulk supplies. Astra, Feather, Gillette and Personna are examples of brands, not a ranking or recommendations for a specific skin type.
  3. Keep a familiar razor and shaving product and change only the blade.
  4. Start with a fresh blade and record comfort, tugging and your personal assessment of closeness in the journal.
  5. Stop if shaving is uncomfortable. A particular number of shaves is not a target to reach despite symptoms.

When to replace a blade

Replace it when it tugs, is damaged or the shave becomes uncomfortable. There is no universal promise of five, seven or ten shaves. Also follow the manufacturer’s instructions and keep the equipment clean and safely stored.

The app counter records use of the stored blade product. Several individual blades of that product can contribute. Record replacement and the use number in the comment to track the lifespan of a physical blade.

Comparing cost

Compare the price per blade with your actual comfortable uses. A more expensive blade or one described as sharper is not automatically cheaper or better for you.
