Preparing the skin
The aim is hydrated, softer hair and a useful layer of lubrication. Preparation does not need to be elaborate.
Comfortably warm water
Wet the hair after a shower or with a comfortably warm, damp cloth. Water helps soften hair; this does not require an explanation about “opening pores”. Overly hot towels can irritate.
Clean gently and build lather
Remove dirt and skin-care residue with a tolerated gentle cleanser. Load enough soap or cream and add water gradually. Lather should provide a hydrated film rather than dry on the skin.
Pre-shave is optional
An extra oil or pre-shave product is not essential. Use one only if it helps and your skin tolerates it. Stop using it if it burns or itches.
Before the first stroke, check the grain and use a clean, undamaged blade.
